The Best Laid Plans

We are 10 days into the new year, and 2016 has already taught me a valuable lesson.  Sometimes the best thing to do when you're stuck is to just start over.  I've seen the "new year, new me" meme floating around, and I know I'm part of that crowd.  But I can't help but like the idea of a clean slate and a clear "start" to something new.  Except, somehow, it's always been a difficult concept for me artwork-wise.

My main art resolution was to focus on finishing illustrations, and instead of posting a daily doodle, that I'd try for a more polished piece per week.  And let's just say that the struggle is real.  I feel like I have been so far removed from the illustration side of things (gallery pieces not-withstanding), that I'm still trying to find my groove to get back on the regular side of an art routine.

This is what a contrived idea looks like people.  I'm hoping to learn to recognize this for what it is so that I may avoid it in future projects.  (Or at least learn to maneuver around the humps.)

I found myself forcing an idea into fruition, and it just was not happening.  Evidenced above by my 4 attempts at formulating this sketch into something resembling the idea in my head... and failing.  Not to say that failure is a bad thing.  I'm still trying to get the hang of it as a potential lesson to learn from and not a detrimental foe to be rendered immobile by.

So with that in mind, here's the first official "art" post of the year!  She's nowhere near perfect.  And even as I tried to finish strong, the ink gods were against me.  (Hello, I see you giant blobs... You are bright and shiny and fat.)  But I'm happy with where she's at for now.  I've accepted her as is, and she'll do for a "first step."

ch-ch-ch-changes!

Hello lovely internet people!  I know the blog has been quiet for a long time... But there are some (big?!) changes coming soon!

July has been an amazing month full of changes for me, and I'm so excited to be able to share with you all what's in store... (hint... cough... hint...)

If you're following me on Instagram, I'm sure I've bombarded you with my daily drawings.  But hopefully you're enjoying them even just a bit. ;)  Changes to the site are also underway.  I've consolidated a few things, added a few things, spruced up the logo, and hopefully the updated work will speak for itself.

I'm figuring out how to streamline my posting and that should happen in the next few weeks...

There is also a big(-ish) announcement coming soon!  Fun things are percolating, and I'm as giddy as can be.

A little bonus post... I submitted this fanart piece to the Inside Out Tumblr...  And while it didn't make the cut, I thought it was pretty darn cute.

#BeBrave

Happy (relatively) New Year friends! :P

The ending of a year usually fills me with a bit of ennui, but 2014 was surprisingly different.  I'm not sure if it's the result of getting older, but this year end was full of acceptance and contentment.  Maybe it's the prospect that tabula rasa of the new year or the fact that I've got a few art-related things already on the horizon, but I have a positive vibe going into 2015.

I usually stress about resolutions...  it's hard not to fall into the hype, but I think I just have a few (albeit fairly important) simple goals this year...

Be Brave.  Make Mistakes.  Start Again.

If you follow me on Instagram, I've posted about having some shows lined up in the next few weeks.  I'm obviously nervous, but excited!

I feel so lucky to be asked to be in another great group show at A LITTLE KNOWN SHOP in Anaheim.  It's definitely become one of my favorite spots ever (in life!!).

The show is a Tribute to Don Bluth and is being curated by the lovely ladies of 2 Sketchy Dames and Jesse Greenberg.  The gallery opens on Saturday January 24 at 6pm!  I don't think I'll ever be not nervous before a show, but I am feeling slightly more prepared for this one!  I think... :P

Here's a little sneak peek of my piece:

I used to love watching Anastasia... Who am I kidding?  I still love watching Anastasia!  I used to have the VHS.  Yes, VHS.  Legit.

I've also been selected to showcase my work at PRESENT hosted by RAW Orange County on Friday, February 6th from 6pm -10pm at the Yost Theater in Santa Ana!  It's my first time working with them, and while I'm intimidated to be showing amongst such talented individuals, I'm also quite humbled to be considered one of their peers.  :)

The lineup is pretty impressive with musical acts, spoken word performances and even a fashion show at the end of the night!  If you'd like to support me, please purchase a ticket on my RAW profile page.   Tickets are $15 and each ticket sold helps to cover my participation costs.  I appreciate all of you and I certainly hope to see some familiar faces there!  I'll be posting some progress in the next couple of weeks!

Cheers!  And here's to a spectacular 2015!!!

#SDCC2014

The days seem to be going by faster and faster each year... It's going to be August in just a few minutes, and it will be another year until the next Comic Con!

Day one!  Waiting in line for Ballroom 20!  Man it was hot!  Exclamation point!

As some of you know, San Diego Comic Con was held at the downtown convention center (& its surrounding Gaslamp area) last week.

It has now become tradition as we sat around our computers many months ago... (& DID NOT hit refresh! *cough* Big Bang Theory *cough*) for the struggle known only as "Pre-Registration".

(dun... dun... dunnnnnn...)

Day 2 was panel day in Ballroom 20.  Lots of surprisingly hilarious panels & panelists, and also a lot of good downtime in between to sit and doodle.

By some magical miracle, it was my computer that was able to jump on the queue that fateful Saturday morning.  And for the first time since the first time in 2008, we bought 4-day passes!  I almost couldn't believe my luck.  Four whole frickin' days!!  It was unheard of!! (Not really, but kind of...) Needless to say we were pretty excited.

Day 3!  Random shaved-head guy!  And just kidding Korra!  I don't know why I can't draw a decent picture of her...

Fast forward to July 24, as we arrived at the hallowed halls of the San Diego Convention Center, my husband, my friend Lorance, & I embarked into the first (of many, many, many) lines that weekend, and waited patiently as the hard-working escalators & volunteers helped us ascend into the arena of badge pickup!  Which is actually one of the most efficient parts of any con I've ever experienced.  (I'm lookin' at you AX!!)

Meager attempt at Captain America, Steve Rogers.

And so began our 7th annual celebration of the popular arts.  We've only gone for a few years, but I feel that it's grown exponentially since the first time.  There weren't too many things that I really *had* to see.  And honestly, it's better that way, because I am terrible at waiting in line for longer than an hour.  And it also guarantees that my disappointment is kept at a minimum.

This year's theme was "waiting for panels", but it wasn't all bad and was an overall fun time.  Sunday was probably my favorite as it redeemed a lot of the missed opportunities from the previous days.

Not only did NerdHQ deliver some top-notch panels at PETCO park all weekend, but all proceeds benefit Operation Smile.  Again, with magical luck on my side, the weekend tapered off with a FABULOUS talk featuring Joss Whedon (who called in since he had just gotten surgery), but also Nathan Fillion, Alan Tudyk, Chloe Bennet, Seth Green, and Liam McIntyre.  And then after that, we were able to see the ridiculously hilarious and good-looking cast of Supernatural -- Jared Padalecki, Jensen Ackles, Misha Collins, and Mark Sheppard.  (moderated by the equally hilarious and good-looking Aisha Tyler).

Always a good time to get back into the nerdy things...  I can't wait for next year!  Here's hoping my ticket-acquiring luck carries over!  And just to prolong the nerd-high a little longer... Here, have an old Batgirl doodle!  Does this count as a #TBT?

So... It looks like I got into the gallery!

୧(﹒︠ᴗ﹒︡)୨

Got the confirmation email a few days ago, and while I don't want to jinx myself (from what, I don't know), I'm sooooo excited and happy to be able to show work!

Here's a super-cropped sneak peek of my full piece.  Cropped for mysterious purposes!!  But mostly because it's so unfinished.  LOL!

Well now...

There is a Firefly + Serenity Tribute show happening on July 12.  It is moderated by 2 Sketchy Dames, and will be held at Community in Anaheim.  More info on their event page.

I'm excited not only for the theme and event, but also because I've actually made things and submitted them! (insert evil laughter here).  This is pretty monumental for me because as evidenced by this blog, I've been in hermit mode for a while...

Anyway, I submitted these 2 concept sketches which will hopefully be part of their art deck and another full-size piece for the gallery.  I'm really hoping to be part of the artist line-up... And I also hope that the finished product will look half as decent as I picture it in my head.

(● ̄(エ) ̄●)  P.S. Looks like they're still taking some submissions for the art deck! Check out their facebook page for more info!

WHWW: Thursday Edition!

So. . .  I'm a little late . . . This week's Wednesday post is on Thursday. . . :P

My OOTD (that's outfit of the day...).  Except I'm not cool enough to be a fashion blogger... So you get a derpy sketch instead.

I am in need of so much sleep right now.  Good night moon!
