Diana and Grace at Designer*Con 2015!

hey! it's grace... ;)

hey! it's grace... ;)

I am once again humbled by the generous, amazing, kind and just overall awesome people I am lucky enough to call my friends and family.

As I mentioned in the previous post, I have been preparing for an art showcase for a little over a month. It went down this past Friday at the Yost Theater in Santa Ana. The turnout was amazing to say the least, but the outpouring of love and support from everyone has me floored.

I'm not a very outgoing person. Surprising, I know. ;) And I'm not very outspoken either, but I've been wanting to make good on my 2015 resolution to be brave, and I think I was able to accomplish that a little bit here. This show was a first for me, and it was a wonderful experience. It was nerve-wracking, exciting, challenging, and definitely pushed some of my limits.

I was able to show my work, gathered my courage and talked about myself (yikes!) and talked about my art (double-yikes!), and even sell a bunch of mini originals and prints. I haven't been this happy about my art in a long time and it's pretty damn good feeling.

Original MINIS - Watercolor and inks. These were super fun to make. Stay tuned for more! :)

I tend to internalize a lot of things... I'm an introvert through and through. But I think little by little, if I'm able to show and share my work with more people, it will get a little bit easier to show more of what makes me tick.

I'm going to ride out this high as far as I can, and with the rock solid support system of my friends and family, I know I can take it far far far faaaar into the future.

2015 has only just begun, but I can't wait to see where it takes me.

Halloween Gallery - Recap

Hello internet!

This past Saturday, A Little Known Shop hosted their 2nd annual Day of the Dead and Halloween event! I've been lucky to be part of a couple of their events, and both times have been an exceptional experience.

I had a chance to sit next to Chrissy Mahuna at the artist tables. She had a couple of these AMAZEBALLS needle-felted sculptures on display. Needless to say, I felt awed, and inspired, and a whole lot of inadequate. :P

As promised, here are a few in-progress shots of "Dame de Chat". Kudos to those who get the joke...

It's been a really long time since I've done something fully traditional. I've missed my graphite pencils.

I'm quite happy with the results. The watercolor graphite was a little out of my comfort zone, but I kind of like the unpredictable nature of it. It was a good challenge to try to manipulate it since I don't usually work with water-based mediums that often.

And the final product framed! :) I didn't get a close-up of it on the wall, but I did get an awesome pic with some faboo people. (Not pictured because I don't know how they would feel about a public blog...)

I know I am surrounded by amazing people. I'm grateful for it every day. But it always surprises and humbles me to think that they think of me the same way. <3

*fuzzy feelings*

Here's to a great rest of the week~!!

As some of you know, the Firefly+Serenity Deck of Art Cards show was this past Saturday, July 12. It was held at Community in Anaheim curated by 2 Sketchy Dames.

I'm trying to hold on to that endorphin high from Saturday's event. Hoping I can keep that happy vibe for at least another day or two.

I submitted 3 pieces to the gallery and was pleasantly surprised to see all 3 also in the card deck!

The gallery also held an artist signing panel. And I was nervous (of course), because new things always make me anxious... But like most things, it turned out to be an amazing night. Being able to share in a gallery experience again had lifted something heavy from my heart. I don't have much confidence on most days (& I'm not really sure where that came from), but it was humbling, to say the least, to have that many people acknowledge my work. I'll never stop being a student, but it's a nice affirmation that perhaps I am no longer a novice.

Having this unspoken camaraderie with fans of the show was indescribable. But most of all, the amount of support I saw from my friends was humbling. My face hurt from all the smiling. See proof below. So much smiling...

Please ignore my DERP face and hair. Much excite! Such happy! Very art!

I hope to continue on this upward trend. I need to clear my mind, breathe deep, and let my heart lead me to bigger and better things...

One week!

The Firefly Art Deck Gallery is a week away!! For anyone in the Anaheim/OC area, I think it'll be a really great show. I find that even the smallest things, when done with heart and passion, usually turn out to be fantastic. And one should never underestimate the power of FANDOM

Opening Night: July 12 6pm - 10pm ( with an artists signing panel: 7pm - 9pm)

Print Prep!

Print Prep!

It's been a busy (productive!) week. It's been a long time since I've prepped for a show, and I must say i've missed it. I don't know what it says about me that I find cutting out and assembling prints a very zen activity. And, as I am a sucker for cute branded things, there's a little thank you mini card in the back with 3 different designs. Just for funsies.

Anyway I hope to see some familiar faces, and I'm looking forward to meeting new ones! :)

(& a special thanks to my husband for being awesome and not minding that this event is on his birthday... :P... Pre- and Post- celebrations will be had!!)

Well now...

There is a Firefly + Serenity Tribute show happening on July 12. It is moderated by 2 Sketchy Dames, and will be held at Community in Anaheim. More info on their event page.

I'm excited not only for the theme and event, but also because I've actually made things and submitted them! (insert evil laughter here). This is pretty monumental for me because as evidenced by this blog, I've been in hermit mode for a while...

Anyway, I submitted these 2 concept sketches which will hopefully be part of their art deck and another full-size piece for the gallery. I'm really hoping to be part of the artist line-up... And I also hope that the finished product will look half as decent as I picture it in my head.

(● ̄(エ) ̄●) P.S. Looks like they're still taking some submissions for the art deck! Check out their facebook page for more info!

Why is it so easy to fall back on bad habits?

When did my weekends turn into simply a recovery period from the whirlwind of work week?

I've missed having fun... I've somehow forgotten how important it is to unwind and let go of the negative energy and recharge...

Somehow... When I wasn't looking... I turned into a curmudgeony adult. :\

I'd left my sense of wonderment somewhere around college. And I'd misplaced my imagination not long after that.

Gallery Nucleus to the rescue.

The opening reception for their Imaginary Friends exhibit was this past Saturday, April 19. I went with a dear friend and had a great time.

Imaginary Friends Exhibit | 4/19/14 - 5/11/14

Imaginary Friends Exhibit | 4/19/14 - 5/11/14

I was lucky enough to be able to submit and show a piece there a few years ago for their Harry Potter Tribute Show. It's still one of my proudest moments. :)

Since its opening in 2004, it has been one of my favorite galleries to visit. Their shows and events always carry a lot of whimsy and it gives me great joy to see the variety of artists they represent on their walls.

To be honest, I didn't really know too much about the show going on, but like I said, I'm always a fan of the work they represent, and this show is no exception.

Imaginary Friends celebrates that little piece of childhood that I didn't know I'd been missing. There are a few familiar favorites in their lineup as well as several new names that I will be sure to keep a close eye on.

In addition to the great showing in the lower gallery, Imaginary Friends also features children's book illustrator Dan Santat's new book - The Adventures of Beekle: The Unimaginary Friend.

If you like cute things, wonderful things, whimsical things, beautiful things, wonderous things, I highly suggest a visit to Gallery Nucleus. The show runs until May 11.
