It's a new day + month + theme!

Hello world~ It's a new month (eep! AUGUST?!) and the beginning of something new.  If you follow me on Instagram, you know I've been (fairly) good at posting a drawing a day! It's not much, but I'm actually quite proud of this...  Unfortunately, July got the better of me.  But I think it was for the best.  I'm feeling rested and ready to get that daily drawing habit back up and running!

The last daily draw I completed was the month of June, and that one was immensely fun!  I also was quite proud of how the whole set looked.  I smell a little book in the works. ;)

August is shaping up to be a busy one as well as I prep for Long Beach Comic Con!  It will be at the Long Beach Convention Center September 2-3.  I'm gonna try my darn-toot'n-est to get some new prints and originals ready for you guys!

And if you swing by my Instagram, I'm starting a new ~witchy~ theme this month in preparation for the Mega Mini Monster Mash Gallery at the Fan*Alley Artist Lodge on October 2nd!! I want to keep challenging myself to expand and grow as an artist so I'll be using this opportunity to push my creativity. *success pose!*

And just around the corner from that is Designer Con in November!! *phew* I always felt like I worked best under pressure, so there's no shortage here.

Oh, and if you can't make it to an event... I have also re-opened my online shop! (GASP! I KNOW!!)  It's currently home to just a few select prints, but I'm hoping to add a few more bits and bobs as soon as I figure out how to manage shipping. ;P Let me know if there's something you'd like to see in the shop!  I also have a lot of grandiose ideas for other types of merch, so stay tuned for that announcement!

Thanks for reading! (。♥‿♥。)

Hey it's Update Time!

Hello Blogosphere!  So many things have happened in the past couple of months & especially the past few weeks! ⌒°(❛ᴗ❛)°⌒

First off, I just came back from a EuroTrip like 4 days ago. I feel really lucky to be able to travel and have these great experiences.  It was so much fun, and I can already tell I'll be reliving the whole thing through my photos.  ⊂((・▽・))⊃

I didn't get a chance to post about it much here, but I attended and tabled at my first ever Long Beach Comic Con this past weekend!!!!!  If you follow me on Instagram, I posted a few updates and needless to say, I had a FANTASTIC first time.  In fact, I had SUCH a great first experience that I'll be there again next year!! YAAASSSSS!!!!! (*•̀ᴗ•́*)و ̑̑

No lie though, I'm pretty sure I fell asleep with my eyes closed during the few quiet moments.  Hahahaha...  I was super jet-lagged after arriving home just 1.5 days before the event, but seeing familiar faces and positive reactions from people enjoying my artwork was a super energy boost like no other.

 Day 1 at my table!

Day 1 at my table!

Not only was LBCC a lot of fun, but it was also a great learning experience.  I'll be making a few changes to my setup and also trying to better manage my online store.  It is currently empty and ready for an overhaul, but hopefully I'll get it back up and running soon.

Some mini originals I painted on-site.  I'll be putting the bottom 3 and a few more in my store soon! SOOOONNNN!!!

In other news, I can't say enough good things about the stickers I got from StickerMule.  They were a pretty big hit and the quality is just top notch.  If anyone out there is looking to get some made, I highly recommend them. ;)

One last thing, I've made a Facebook page specifically for my art stuff!  I'll be posting sneak peeks, event updates, and a few little surprise goodies here and there.  It'd be great if you could swing by and hit the like button. ;)

Phew!  That was a lot of words to go through.  Thanks for reading and see you all in November for Designer Con!

Here we go...

The end of 2016 is shaping up to be a busy one. I'll be honest... I'm feeling a little out of my element, but I think it's pushing me in a good direction.  And hopefully it's an ongoing momentum.

Gossamer Thoughts

I feel my thoughts have been insubstantial as of late.  I'm not quite sure which direction to go, and I'm surprised that it hasn't spiraled out of control.  I usually like structure, and schedules, and having a plan of action.  And having a contingency plan if that fails.  I tend to overthink... And worry about overthinking... Which makes me sooooo indecisive about my art.

Honestly, this week's theme had stumped me until about 5 hours ago.  My husband suggested "Imagination".  What a wonderful and daunting word to visualize.  But in the end, what felt right was something more organic and cathartic with a few colors, a series of blended textures and a simple silhouette.

The Best Laid Plans

We are 10 days into the new year, and 2016 has already taught me a valuable lesson.  Sometimes the best thing to do when you're stuck is to just start over.  I've seen the "new year, new me" meme floating around, and I know I'm part of that crowd.  But I can't help but like the idea of a clean slate and a clear "start" to something new.  Except, somehow, it's always been a difficult concept for me artwork-wise.

My main art resolution was to focus on finishing illustrations, and instead of posting a daily doodle, that I'd try for a more polished piece per week.  And let's just say that the struggle is real.  I feel like I have been so far removed from the illustration side of things (gallery pieces not-withstanding), that I'm still trying to find my groove to get back on the regular side of an art routine.

This is what a contrived idea looks like people.  I'm hoping to learn to recognize this for what it is so that I may avoid it in future projects.  (Or at least learn to maneuver around the humps.)

This is what a contrived idea looks like people.  I'm hoping to learn to recognize this for what it is so that I may avoid it in future projects.  (Or at least learn to maneuver around the humps.)

I found myself forcing an idea into fruition, and it just was not happening.  Evidenced above by my 4 attempts at formulating this sketch into something resembling the idea in my head... and failing.  Not to say that failure is a bad thing.  I'm still trying to get the hang of it as a potential lesson to learn from and not a detrimental foe to be rendered immobile by.

So with that in mind, here's the first official "art" post of the year!  She's nowhere near perfect.  And even as I tried to finish strong, the ink gods were against me.  (Hello, I see you giant blobs... You are bright and shiny and fat.)  But I'm happy with where she's at for now.  I've accepted her as is, and she'll do for a "first step."

Analogy very much intended. ;)

It's (a)LIVE!!

TL:DR
Yay!  The new site is up!! *happy dance~ happy dance*

If you know me at all, you know I've gone back and forth about changing anything on this site.  But I think it's come together nicely.  Squarespace is ever so helpful in making updates a breeze.  I'm sure it doesn't look like much has changed, but I've toiled over quite a few things.  And if you notice in the upper navigation... There is an additional link to my first online store! *extra happy dance!*

I've set up shop on SOCIETY6!!!

I've decided to make my Alice prints open edition and they're now available on Society6!!!  I'll be uploading more pieces slowly but surely, but I wanted to make sure it was up and running to coincide with version 2.0 of heyitsgrace.com!  I will be adding a couple of my July Jewels pieces, and any suggestions would be fab!  I always appreciate your feedback and would love to make my art available as prints and eventually as other goods as well.

Ahh... I feel renewed and re-energized!  I'm feeling good about August you guys... And the rest of the year's looking mighty shiny too!

In other news... I will be setting up shop at DESIGNER*CON this November!

My awesomesauce friend Diana and I will be sharing a booth at Designer*Con!  It will be held on November 21 - 22 at the Pasadena Convention Center!!  Stay tuned for a Facebook invite and some promo pieces coming soon!!!

ch-ch-ch-changes!

Hello lovely internet people!  I know the blog has been quiet for a long time... But there are some (big?!) changes coming soon!

July has been an amazing month full of changes for me, and I'm so excited to be able to share with you all what's in store... (hint... cough... hint...)

If you're following me on Instagram, I'm sure I've bombarded you with my daily drawings.  But hopefully you're enjoying them even just a bit. ;)  Changes to the site are also underway.  I've consolidated a few things, added a few things, spruced up the logo, and hopefully the updated work will speak for itself.

I'm figuring out how to streamline my posting and that should happen in the next few weeks...

There is also a big(-ish) announcement coming soon!  Fun things are percolating, and I'm as giddy as can be.

A little bonus post... I submitted this fanart piece to the Inside Out Tumblr...  And while it didn't make the cut, I thought it was pretty darn cute.

No foolin...

It's already April!  What is this time warp?  I've been trying to keep my spirits up and hoping to keep a forward momentum in creating work for me.  I have been listening to podcasts and streaming talks online while I work.  It's not only a superb way to get in the zone, but it's also a great boost to hear people I admire being able to vocalize what I struggle with creatively every day.

If you follow me on INSTAGRAM (cough shameless plug cough), you'll notice my daily sketch posts.  It's not much, but I'm pretty proud to be able to rpoduce even a little something every day.  It started with #FanFebruary and evolved into #MarchMashup... which just ended with this cheeky little doodle.

March Mashup Day 31 River Tam (Firefly) x Phil Spiderman...

March Mashup Day 31 River Tam (Firefly) x Phil Spiderman...

I really want to push myself to be better.  And the only way I know to do that is through consistency.  Admittedly, it's one of my least favorable traits.  I get so distrac... SQUIRREL!!

Being an adult is a lot more complicated than what I imagined as a kid.  But you know everyone walks their own path and I can only go my own pace.  It's a little windy and full of roads untraveled, but the path before me is still pretty bright and promising.

Whew!  That was a little cheesy even for me, but I have to be true to myself and as a wonderful friend has shown me... Be authentic! :)

April's daily project is all to do with authenticity and finding balance.  I feel like I've been taking life too seriously and basically forgotten what it's felt like to enjoy what I do every day, take pleasure in my work, and remember why I chose a creative career in the first place.

I've had my share of career highs and lows, but I have yet to feel satisfaction in my daily grind.  As a creative "professional", I think it's detrimental to your  mental state to live without creating things for yourself.  I've been solely focused on "career success" and my "lack" of it that I've completely bypassed what I actually want to do... Create things!

And with this month's daily project, I'm one step closer!  I heard about a project to help get you in a positive frame of mind.  The task is to write or record something that you are grateful for or makes you happy every day.  Now, words are not my forte... As evidenced by this TL:DR post...  So i thought I'd up the ante and draw my happy/thankful things instead!  I also wanted to challenge myself further in creating more "complete" or at least colored illustrations, and hopefully have a nice set of 30 by the end of the month.

To start us off, here's Day 1: Corgi Butts.

 April 1 : Corgi Butts

This theme is #hashtagless... So please help me think of ideas!  No (wo)man is an island, and I can't thank you enough for your continued support and encouragement.

Good night internet!

Grateful

 hey! it's grace... ;)

hey! it's grace... ;)

I am once again humbled by the generous, amazing, kind and just overall awesome people I am lucky enough to call my friends and family.

As I mentioned in the previous post, I have been preparing for an art showcase for a little over a month.  It went down this past Friday at the Yost Theater in Santa Ana.  The turnout was amazing to say the least, but the outpouring of love and support from everyone has me floored.

I'm not a very outgoing person.  Surprising, I know. ;)  And I'm not very outspoken either, but I've been wanting to make good on my 2015 resolution to be brave, and I think I was able to accomplish that a little bit here.  This show was a first for me,  and it was a wonderful experience.  It was nerve-wracking, exciting, challenging, and definitely pushed some of my limits.

I was able to show my work, gathered my courage and talked about myself (yikes!) and talked about my art (double-yikes!), and even sell a bunch of mini originals and prints.  I haven't been this happy about my art in a long time and it's pretty damn good feeling.

Original MINIS - Watercolor and inks.   These were super fun to make.  Stay tuned for more! :)

I tend to internalize a lot of things...  I'm an introvert through and through.  But I think little by little, if I'm able to show and share my work with more people, it will get a little bit easier to show more of what makes me tick.

I'm going to ride out this high as far as I can, and with the rock solid support system of my friends and family, I know I can take it far far far faaaar into the future.

2015 has only just begun, but I can't wait to see where it takes me.

Halloween Gallery - Recap

Hello internet!

This past Saturday, A Little Known Shop hosted their 2nd annual Day of the Dead and Halloween event!  I've been lucky to be part of a couple of their events, and both times have been an exceptional experience.

I had a chance to sit next to Chrissy Mahuna at the artist tables.  She had a couple of these AMAZEBALLS needle-felted sculptures on display.  Needless to say, I felt awed, and inspired, and a whole lot of inadequate.  :P

As promised, here are a few in-progress shots of "Dame de Chat".  Kudos to those who get the joke...

Work in Progress - graphite on watercolor paper

It's been a really long time since I've done something fully traditional.  I've missed my graphite pencils.

Work in Progress - Building up layers and using 2H - 2B pencils

I'm quite happy with the results.  The watercolor graphite was a little out of my comfort zone, but I kind of like the unpredictable nature of it.  It was a good challenge to try to manipulate it since I don't usually work with water-based mediums that often.

And the final product framed! :)  I didn't get a close-up of it on the wall, but I did get an awesome pic with some faboo people. (Not pictured because I don't know how they would feel about a public blog...)

I know I am surrounded by amazing people.  I'm grateful for it every day.  But it always surprises and humbles me to think that they think of me the same way.  <3

*fuzzy feelings*

Here's to a great rest of the week~!!
